“Kenzie! Body straight!” I eyed the younger girl as she swam backstroke. She attempted to make the correction, but old habits were difficult to break. I’d talk to her again once she’d finished her laps.

“Billy! Legs together!” Jared called over the noise of ten splashing swimmers.

He’d taken up his post on the opposite end of the pool, shouting a constant flow of instructions to his swimmers and a few to mine. That was okay. We were supposed to be a team. Not an easy task when I’d avoided making eye contact with him all morning. I just couldn’t help it. My mind kept going back to the night before. I couldn’t stop thinking about how easy and fun our conversation had been over dinner before I ruined it by being my stupid judgey self.

Then there was Jared in the pool, swimming in the moonlight through the windows. My heart raced remembering the moment when he’d turned to face the window where I stood watching him. I’d ducked, I hoped, in time to avoid getting caught. I’d hidden behind the building until I heard the door open and close and the sound of Jared’s steps crunching on the gravel as he returned to his own cabin. Then I hightailed it back to my bed. The girls were still sleeping. I hoped none of them had woken looking for me. But even if they had, they would probably just assume I’d gone to the restroom. Which I had.

I was tired and groggy when my alarm sounded at six thirty. Our group was first in the pool before breakfast. Jared had arrived with his crew, bright-eyed and cheerful, the jerk, while I was sluggish and irritable.

We had another fifteen minutes and then we could all go eat. I desperately needed coffee. And a nap. The two-hour break counselors got in the afternoon when the coaches took over couldn’t come soon enough. I’d been planning to get my own training in during that time, but the way things were going, I’d be lucky to stay awake that long.

“What’s your issue, Harris?”

I jumped. “Geez, Oliver. Do you have to be so loud?”

Jared raised one brow. “If I didn’t know any better, I’d think you were hung over. Rough night?”

I scowled. “I don’t sleep well away from home.”

“Ohhh.” He faced the pool. “Is that why you were spying on me last night? Because you couldn’t sleep?”

Crap. He’d seen me? What now? Should I pretend not to know what he was talking about? “Spying? I don’t remember spying on anyone, let alone you.” I was a terrible liar and an even worse actress. He could probably see my heart about to beat out of my chest. That wasn’t suspicious at all when the most exertion I’d exhibited in the last hour was to lift a whistle to my mouth.

“Really?” He shot me a quick look. “Because I thought I saw someone standing by the window when I got out of the pool.”

Someone. Not me, necessarily. Maybe he was guessing? It could have been anyone stalking, I mean, watching him.
